Middleware—Base ProjectsCoG Kits: Enabling Middleware for Designing Science Applications, Web Portals and Problem Solving EnvironmentsANL, LBNL Toolkits that will allow the application programmer or middleware developer to readily make use of Grid services from a higher-level framework. These toolkits will allow for easier and more rapid application development. They also encourage code reuse and avoid the duplication of effort. Storage Resource Management for Data Grid Applications LBNL, FNAL Middleware components to manage the storage resources on the grid so that data-intensive applications have a way of coping with the potential data access bottleneck. Both tape-based and disk-based systems are targeted. Middleware to Support Group to Group CollaborationANL The successful Access Grid technology has identifids several research areas important to large-scale deployment of high-end collaborative environment. The higher priority ones are targeted for development—virtual venues, security, workspace docking, node management interface, tiled display interface and asynchronous collaboration. Pervasive Collaborative Computing EnvironmentLBNL, University of Wisconsin The creation of a persistent synchronous and asynchronous collaboration system to support a flexible, secure, seamless collaboration environment that supports the entire continuum of interactions be tween collaborators. It will allow participants to locate each other, use asynchronous and synchronous messaging, share documents, share progress, share applications and hold videoconfeences. The resulting tools will have widespread impact and an effective workflow solution could greatly address some significant limitations in existing collaboration technology. Scientific Annotation MiddlewarePNNL, ORNL A scientific annotation middleware system that will provide significant advances in research documentation and data pedigree tracking. Researchers access the system through a notebook interface as well as through components embedded in other software systems. It will provide more complete, effective and efficient ways to document scientific work.
Reliable and Secure Group CommunicationLBNL Development of the components needed for a peer-to-peer group communication infrastructure that provides reliability, security, and fault-tolerance while enabling scalability on the Internet scale. Distributed Security Architectures LBNL Provide assured, policy-based access control for computer mediated resources that operate in wide area network environment, specifically integrating the existing authorization mechanism with the core of emerging standards. |
