High Performance Computing beyond PetaScale in Japan

Toichi Sakata, RIKEN

Riken has been conducting a project to build a next generation supercomputer under the contract with the Japanese government since last year, which will be capable of over peta scale simulations and be in full operation by the end of 2011. Important objectives are to keep leading edge hardware technologies inside Japan and also to stimulate use of simulations in R&D in academia and companies in order to investigate sophisticated natural phenomena only possible by such large scale simulations for designing novel functional materials and creating future technologies. To accomplish the latter, nano and life sciences are selected as grand challenges to develop computer codes designed for the supercomputer in the project. In my talk, the details of the project are presented.
