Stan Woosley, a theoretical astrophysicist, is a leading authority on supernovae, nuclear astrophysics, and gamma-ray bursts, with over 400 publications in these areas. He directs the Computational Astrophysics Consortium, funded by SciDAC and headquartered at UCSC. This Consortium, with members from nine universities and DOE labs, works on a better understanding of supernovae of all types through large scale simulation. The current focus is on all aspects of Type Ia supernovae, from their birth as a tiny spark inside a white dwarf star to the observations that enable cosmological studies. A fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), Woosley received both the APS's Hans Bethe Prize and the American Astronomical Society's Bruno Rossi Prize in 2005 for his work on supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and, in 2006, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
