Biography

John is the group leader of the Computational Earth Sciences Group in the Computer Sciences and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee in 1991, having previously joined the mathematics group at ORNL in 1984. His research interests include numerical methods and parallel algorithms for climate modeling, fluid dynamics modeling, and the numerical approximation of conservation laws. He has served as an advisor on a number of boards and panels for the development of production parallel computing environments and high end computing, and as a contributing editor for the SciDAC Journal. He has worked on two SciDAC projects, Collaborative Design and Development of the Community Climate System Model for Terascale Computers and A Scalable and Extensible Earth System Model for Climate Change Science.
